Executive Editor                                                                                                                                                  

Location: Lanham, MD/Flexible

Rowman & Littlefield is looking for an Executive Editor, responsible for acquiring primarily textbooks (upper-level undergraduate and graduate level, including supplemental texts), as well as professional, reference, scholarly or general interest titles in one or more of the following fields:

 geography, international relations, security studies, international/world history, area studies (especially Asian, European, Russian, and Latin American studies), religion, and sociology

The most qualified candidate will be responsible for shepherding titles through review, development, and transmittal to production and contributing to related sales and marketing efforts. 

 Responsibilities

  • Developing and periodically updating the strategic growth plan for the list
  • Soliciting proposals and identifying back-list titles ready for revision
  • Creating editorial board documents including P&L statements and presenting projects to the editorial board
  • Creating and negotiating contracts
  • Delegating to and supervising an editorial assistant and possibly mentoring/supervising one or more junior editors.
  • Managing author relationships
  • Attending professional meetings of interest to scholars and educators and campus visits (once travel resumes)
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with relevant associations and professional groups, to include the development and maintenance of new and existing co-publishing relationships
  • Sales analysis to identify strengths and weaknesses of the list
  • Other duties as assigned

 

 Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences or humanities (advanced degree a plus but not required)
  • Minimum of 10 years of proven acquisitions experience, with priority given to experience with upper-level undergraduate and graduate level textbooks
  • An active network in one or more of the fields listed above
  • Experience with co-publishing relationships a plus
  • Intellectual curiosity and strong interest and abilities in list building
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Creativity and self-motivation
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite (Word, Excel), Outlook, and Windows
