ROWMAN & LITTLEFIELD ACQUIRES HAL LEONARD PERFORMING ARTS PUBLISHING GROUP
Friday, December 14, 2018: Rowman & Littlefield (R&L) today announces the acquisition of certain book trade imprints and selected other trade titles from Hal Leonard Performing Arts Publishing Group (“HLPAPG”), the leading independent publisher for the performing arts. The business has been acquired from Hal Leonard LLC, which will continue its separate and substantial business of publishing sheet music and music instructional materials as well as its growing business of the distribution of music instruments and related products.

The purchased publications range from music business, marketing, songwriting and audio/recording educational courses to popular memoirs, biographies and lavish illustrated editions. The list offers the largest collection of books and digital content for aspiring and professional musicians, producers, engineers, directors, actors of stage and screen, and discerning fans of pop culture, cinema, television, Broadway, jazz, blues, hip hop, rock 'n' roll, and more. In addition to some books from the Hal Leonard Books imprint (which will be rolled into Rowman & Littlefield following the acquisition), the list includes the imprints Applause Theatre & Cinema Books, Amadeus Press, Backbeat Books, and Limelight Editions. As part of the deal, a number of trade book publishers whose titles are currently distributed by Hal Leonard will now be serviced by National Book Network (NBN), the leading independent distributor, under its President, Jason Brockwell.

Now in its fourth decade, Applause is America's foremost publisher of theater and cinema books. Books range from biographies of film and theater luminaries, to playscripts, librettos, monologue books, and explorations of film and theater history.

Founded in 1987, Amadeus Press offers a full line of books on classical music and opera. Its mission is to publish books that appeal to the wide audience of discerning music lovers while also maintaining the highest scholarly integrity. Through series such as Unlocking the Masters, Amadeus brings the joy and beauty of the world's greatest composers to the largest possible audience.

Since 1991, Backbeat Books have been favorites among passionate music fans and musicians. Known for their depth, spirit, and authority, Backbeat offers a diverse range of books—from biographies and memoirs, critical examinations and histories, to authoritative volumes on musical instruments—covering all areas of rock 'n' roll, jazz, and beyond.

For more than 30 years, Limelight Editions has been one of the world's leading performing arts publishers. Limelight offers essential resources for working and aspiring actors, producers, writers, directors, filmmakers, set designers, and others, as well as guides to navigating a successful career in film and theater. From winning that audition, to getting your film made, to managing your own theatre company, Limelight books have the information you need.

Applause Theatre & Cinema Books, Backbeat Books, Limelight Editions and the included distributed publishers will be sold by National Book Network, while the acquired titles from Amadeus Press and selected other Hal Leonard titles will be sold by Rowman & Littlefield, under each company’s discount schedules. The vendor transfer from Hal Leonard to NBN and R&L will be February 1, 2019. Until this date, customers should continue to direct orders to Hal Leonard as normal.

John Cerullo, Group Publisher, joins Rowman & Littlefield, reporting to Oliver Gadsby, President of the company’s Academic and Professional Division. Carol Flannery, Editorial Director, and Clare Cerullo, Production Manager, also join Rowman & Littlefield.

Commenting on the acquisition, Jed Lyons, Group President and CEO, said: “We are delighted to bring the Hal Leonard team and business on board, and are looking forward to working with John and his colleagues. The Hal Leonard list will benefit from extra attention and focus from our own trade and academic teams, and we look forward to publishing the rich array of titles for the world of performing arts coming across with this acquisition.”

John Cerullo observed: “We are thrilled to be joining Rowman & Littlefield, with its track record of independence and fine publishing. The Hal Leonard list has a great new home.”
