Rowman & Littlefield Acquires Finney Company Imprints | Rowman & Littlefield
Finney Company, a 73 year old book publishing company based in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN, announced today the sale of its publishing imprints to The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc. of Lanham, MD effective April 1, 2019.

The asset sale includes nearly 400 titles produced under the following imprints: Astragal Press, Hobar Publications, Finney Career, Live Oak, SkipJack Press, Anacus Press, Great Outdoors Publishing Company, Windward Publishing, Ecopress, Bancroft-Sage Publishing, Lone Oak Press, and Pogo Press.

These imprints publish non-fiction titles with a mission to help improve the quality of lifelong learning in the areas of career and technical education; early tools and trades, including blacksmithing and metalworking; outdoor recreation and environmental sciences; Florida, Florida’s wildlife, nature and history; United States and state-specific/regional history; and children’s books.

“Selling our publishing business to Rowman & Littlefield allows these titles to prosper and reach new audiences along with providing a long-term home for our authors. Jed Lyons and his team have taken the time to understand our titles, customers, authors, and partners. This will aid in a smooth and seamless transition for everyone involved,” stated Finney Company President, Alan Krysan.

Jed Lyons, CEO of Rowman & Littlefield, said, “The Finney Company under Al Krysan developed a gold mine of evergreen titles in small niche areas ignored by larger publishers. Astragal Press and SkipJack Press have long been the “go to” publishers for books on metal working and blacksmithing, now gaining in popularity. Hobar Publications is a leading publisher of books on how to learn trades such as plumbing and woodworking, also gaining in popularity now. And Great Outdoors Publishing Company has been a leading publisher of books on Florida since 1913. It will be a perfect fit for our recently acquired Pineapple Press.”

Finney Company is exploring options for its book distribution and blackboard/communications board businesses. Only the owned publishing imprints are included in this transaction. Specific financial details were not disclosed.

Distribution will be handled by National Book Network (NBN) effective immediately. National Book Network, established in 1986, is an independent, full-service sales, marketing, and distribution company serving North American and overseas independent publishers.
