DESIGNER (L-12-16)

Rowman & Littlefield is seeking a Designer for its cover design department in Lanham, Maryland. This Designer’s primary responsibility is to design book covers, as well as manage them through all stages of production.

Major Responsibilities

  • Creating new book covers using InDesign, including image research, image procurement, and the facilitation of the final cover review/approval process (in partnership with production editors, via print-ready PDF creation)
  • Overseeing outsourced cover work by acting as the liaison between publisher and freelancers
  • Creating covers using existing series cover templates, as well as those required for reprints
  • Departmental tasks, such as (but not limited to) routing printer proofs and assisting with departmental archiving


  • B.A. in Graphic Design or similar
  • 2-3+ years’ experience as a professional designer working in print (publishing industry preferred)
  • Fluency in Apple OS, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), as well as in font management
  • Working knowledge of the prepress, printing, and PDF workflow processes
  • A strong design portfolio demonstrating one’s creative talent (clean files and acute attention to detail a must)
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time wisely
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
