Matthew Ryan Hogan is a practicing internist with over twenty years of experience and the medical director and chief of staff of a large urban hospital near Atlanta. He has won numerous awards for teaching and service and leads a thriving practice of over forty physicians. Hogan is the author of Mr. November, a time-hopping science fiction novel, and has written for numerous medical publications, print news outlets, and peer-reviewed journals. Originally from Philadelphia, he now resides in Decatur, Georgia, with his wife, two children, two pups, and a fish named Jerry.
“What an enjoyable book! In Foot in Mouth Disease, Dr. Matthew Ryan Hogan takes the reader through a series of hilarious, thought-provoking, and sometimes deeply touching vignettes spanning from his early years in Philadelphia through his current life as a husband, father, and practicing physician near Atlanta. Hogan’s writing style is at once highly intelligent and self-effacing and almost always funny. He tackles the challenges and opportunities in society and his own life from the COVID pandemic to his calling to become a ‘weekend novelist’ with what he terms brash pessimism. The result is a delightful collection of stories that is completely entertaining. Foot in Mouth Disease is a wonderful read and most highly recommended.”
— Michael Godin, MD, author of The Big Prick and Fighting Gravity
“Really serious points—not just medical—are embedded in each anecdote, but heavily camouflaged in humour, smut, irreverence, and blissfully fearless rants so that the reader is constantly ambushed when least prepared. Fun, intelligent, moving, and stimulating, Foot in Mouth Disease is a spectacular read.”
— Ileana von Hirsch, author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo: A Rather Unusual Memoir
