Winning Well

Maximizing Coach and Athlete Wellness

Cara Cocchiarella and Camille Adana

Wellness is complex and powerful. And when wellness is maximized in the sports setting, athletes and coaches alike are set up to succeed.

In Winning Well: Maximizing Coach and Athlete Wellness, Cara Cocchiarella and Camille Adana provide coaches and coach developers with the means to implement a more inclusive coaching environment through wellness. Each aspect of wellness is defined within the context of sports, provided along with tips for application within the sports setting. Tangible guidelines are supplemented with personal testimonies from a diverse group of athletes and coaches who highlight their experiences with wellness in coaching—or lack thereof. Self-assessments are provided as powerful tools to help coaches evaluate their own wellness, their promotion of athlete wellness, and inclusive practices.

The demand for wellness and inclusion in sports is substantial, and Winning Well is the first practical guide to help coaches and coach developers bring wellness to the forefront of their practices. Written for coaches in all sports who work with athletes at any level, this book is an inspiring, timely, and accessible resource for those who want to move towards more effective and impactful coaching.

About the Authors

As a coach and coach developer, I aim to center holistic athlete wellness and development. This book is a great resource for that: it provides much-needed, broad and deep definitions for athlete-centered well-being. More than that, Winning Well includes practical tips and case studies to help coaches, coach developers, and athletes better understand how to care for themselves and one another. The language of inclusion, healing, and relationships permeates this book; those looking to unlock the power of sport will find Winning Well a wonderful tool to add to your toolkit of transformative coaching.

— Julie McCleery, PhD, director of Research-Practice Partnerships, Center for Leadership in Athletics, University of Washington; 25+ years coaching youth through elite sports

Winning Well provides great practical advice for supporting all athletes as they strive for excellence on and off the court. It’s one of the first coaching books I’ve read that includes a much-needed formula for coaches in taking care of themselves as well. It’s a desperately needed and refreshing take on inclusive coaching and doing the right thing for everyone in sports.

— Kelly Graves, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, University of Oregon; 2-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year; 8-time West Coast Conference Coach of the Year (Gonzaga University)

Winning Well is an invaluable resource for any coach looking not only to improve his or her winning record, but also to improve the wellness of individual athletes, the coaching staff and of the program as a whole. This book approaches coaching from a place of inclusion and respect, and is aimed at making athletes feel safe and supported in their athletic programs. It provides coaches with information on how to model healthy interactions, and address all facets of wellness in order to produce winning programs, successful athletes and better humans.

— Jamie Schlueter, MD, Team Physician, University of Portland, USA Women’s Ice Hockey, and USA Paralympic Track and Field

This is a great book for anyone just getting into coaching or for the coach with years of experience. If you want to invest in the wellness of yourself and your team, as well as maximize the positive impact that you will have on your athletes, this is a must have for your coaching library.

— Jay Anderson, 2017 United Soccer Coaches National High School Coach of the Year; 6-time Montana Coaches Association Coach of the Year

An absolute must read for all coaches, and anyone who is in the business of working with or managing people. Winning Well is a concise and articulate roadmap to help coaches win at a higher level while also providing a better people-centered process. All of my coaching friends will be getting a copy of Winning Well in their stocking this Christmas!

— Matt Morris, MS CSCS, Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, Colorado State University Pueblo

As a former college athlete and division I coach, I gained an appreciation for what it takes to achieve success in sports both on and off the playing field. Too often the approach to development can be very one dimensional. The authors of Winning Well do a fantastic job of addressing the multi-faceted role of a coach and mentor and provide a detailed framework for success. It is well worth the read!

— Pat Owen, 3-time qualifier, NCAA Wrestling Championships; 2004 Big Ten Medal of Honor Winner; Harvard Wrestling Coach, 2007-2012

Finding ways to make a difference is my biggest takeaway from what Cara and Camille have put together here in Winning Well. For those who have coached, someone may have tapped you on the shoulder and said something like “You would make a good coach one day!” I didn't know how those words would change the course of my life. The impact of coaching and the importance of fostering wellness is captured in this diverse range of perspectives on what we do as coaches.

— Cameron Kiosoglous, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor and Sport Coaching Leadership Program Director, Drexel University; National Team Sports Science Director, USRowing; Education Chair, USCCE
