Regarding Heidegger on technology, Søren Riis gets things just right. He rejects the common tendency to favor either loyal scholarship or creative misuse. Instead, although he starts with a careful reading of “The Question of Technology” in its own terms, his purpose is to argue that today, Heidegger’s view is both initially necessary and ultimately unsatisfying. In this way, Riis not only sets the terms for a sensitive, critical rethinking of other important aspects of Heidegger’s thought. He also opens us up to numerous “unframing” possibilities relating to current technoscientifically framed concerns about nature, art, history, and truth. His final suggestion is perhaps the most challenging: As Riis sees it, Heidegger’s famous essay encourages us to go forward from him by developing multiple “genealogies” of modern technology, each amounting to a freedom-manifesting “temporal artwork.”
