My Favorite Failure

How Setbacks Can Lead to Learning and Growth

Ronald A. Beghetto and Laura McBain

The stories in the book are stitched together like a quilt giving you an overview of the mosaic of failure but also shining a light on the components of failure. The stories provide an insight into how you can create the conditions where you're going to take risks together and then experience failure together. The narratives are from people who examined their favorite failures, pulled the stories apart and provided us with an opportunity to understand how failure is not just one moment or one set of emotions. These stories provide us with a glimpse into how we can approach teaching, learning and setbacks with more humility and more humanity. It’s more than just about getting unstuck, because failure has its own shape, it’s own momentum, and shapes who we are all trying to become.

About the Authors

We all experience failures but we don't all learn from them. In an innovative format, Beghetto and McBann explain in a conversational style how we can better experience and learn from failures! A fantastic book!

— Yong Zhao Ph.D., University of Kansas

My Favorite Failure is filled with stories that made me laugh, cry, squirm, and realize I am not alone. The authors spare us from those tired old arguments about celebrating and screw-ups and setbacks. They rightly treat failure as inevitable and often painful for all of us, and provide mindsets, mantras, and tools to help us respond better both in the moment and the long-term. As I read the lovely and wise conversations between the authors that run through the book, they taught me how to keep moving forward, keep learning, how to laugh at myself and love myself (despite and because of my flaws), and how to teach others to do the same.

— Robert Sutton, organizational psychologist, Stanford professor, and New York Times bestselling author
