This is an excellent edited volume containing chapters from some of the top media scholars in the world. Some people argue that concern about the effects of media on children is overblown and that there is no need for “moral panic.” But the research cited in this volume shows that some level of concern is warranted. These chapters show how exposure to media is one factor that can have a significant influence on a number of important outcomes in children and adolescents, including aggression, desensitization, video game addiction, sexual behavior, obesity, drug and alcohol use, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), academic performance, body self-image, depression, suicide, and sleep. This is a reference book that I will be turning to frequently.
