William G. Hupper has spent over 22 years compiling, collating, and editing the articles included in his multi-volumed index. He has authored articles for theological journals, as well as official government documents related to his vocation and has been a member of the Society of Biblical Literature for over 40 years.
No scholar dealing with the Bible and/or the ancient Near East should ever object to the publication of an additional bibliographical tool to assist him in his perennially difficult task of exerting some control over the ever expanding body of periodical literature covering these two fields. William Hupper is to be admired for his tenacity and daring as the compiler-editor of such a work.
— The Jewish Quarterly Review
The most ambitious single-handed bibliographical project in religious studies of the twentieth century...a monument to the bibliographer's craft, to responsiveness to criticism, to tenacity, and to the bibliography of biblical and ancient Near Eastern scholarship...absolutely indispensable.
— Australian Library Journal
This is a two-volume set index that is over 1,300 pages long. Each volume has a one-page key to the index that helps a person use the index. Each volume has a list of periodical abbreviations that are used in the set. The index uses two columns and the print is readable. In volume 1 is a list of errata, additions which are followed by the author index and then the first part of the subject index (A-I). The second volume continues the rest of the subject index (J-Z), which is then followed by foreign word and phrase index, a Greek index, a Hebrew index, an Aramaic index. This is followed by Cuneiform sign list, Egyptian Hieroglyphic index, Hebrew Bible text index, New Testament text index, Apocrypha text index, Pseudepigrapha text index, Qumran text citations, and, finally, a museum registration number index. Those libraries or scholars who have An Index to English Periodical Literature on the Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies will want this index to complete their sets.
