— American Reference Books Annual, March 2008
The Index's primary purpose is to show what poems have been published by particular poets, what poems have been translated by particular translators, and who wrote poems with particular titles or first lines. It provides access to poems from a broad cross-section of poetry, literary, scholarly, popular, general, and "little" magazines, journals, and reviews published in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean. These periodicals are listed in the Periodicals Indexed section, together with addresses, names of editors, issues indexed in this work, and subscription information. This 35th annual edition contains 6,861 entries for individual poets and translators, and 20,144 entries for individual poems. Criteria for inclusion include the quality of poems, their presentation, and the status or reputation of poets. Within these broad guidelines, the editors attempt to include a cross section of periodicals by type of publisher and publication, place of publication, language, and type of poetry. This edition of the Index includes poems published in 2005, plus earlier years when periodical issues were delayed in publication or were received late.
