Wes D. Gehring is Professor of Film at Ball State University and an Associate Media Editor of USA Today Magazine, for whom he also writes the column 'Reel World.' He is the author of eighteen critically acclaimed books, including Romantic vs. Screwball Comedy (Scarecrow, 2002), and his articles have appeared in numerous journals.
This biography, a reprint from 2003, traces the life and career of actress Irene Dunne (1904-1990). Gehring (film, Ball State U.) details her childhood, bicoastal marriage, and roles on stage and in films. She was most popular during the 1930s and 1940s and acted in melodramas, musicals, and screwball comedies. The connection she had with her favorite director Leo McCarey is discussed, as well as the films The Awful Truth, Love Affair, and others, her postwar films, and retirement. Included is a detailed filmography.
