Varsity Letters is invigorating: it offers a fresh approach...thoroughly researched, well organized, and clearly written...
— NEA Newsletter
...brings a broad perspective to the study of academic archives...an impressive survey of modern university and college documentation systems...a good manual on archival practice...
— The Library Quarterly
The book is about universities, but it is intended to be useful-and will be, I am sure-for building documentation strategies for other kinds of institutions...Samuel's book is a good read, beautifully illustrated, and the product of a cultured mind...
— Journal Of Documentation
...important additions to the corpus of professional literature...
— Journal Of The Society Of Archivists
The volumes complement each other and belong on the reference shelves of everyone concerned with the administration of academic archives...This book offers an important reminder that archivists and curators responsible for college and university records need to give considerable thought to what records ought to be in their archives... This volume sets out a useful and practical plan for developing a documentation strategy for those archives.
— Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarianship

— Zentralblatt für Geologie und Paläontologie
...Also of interest to people in other institutions such as museums, churches, and hospitals.
— Reference and Research Book News
...an important book, not only for academic archivists, but also for everyone concerned about the future of the archival profession.
