Judith Newton is professor of women and gender studies at University of California, Davis. She is the author and editor of many books, including Women, Power, and Subversion: Social Strategies in British Fiction, 1778-1860 and Starting Over: Feminism and the Politics of Cultural Critique. She is currently head of the Consortium for Women and Research at UC Davis.

Many past accounts of “the men's movement” have characterized it as mainly white, middle-class, and heterosexual, have been critical of its focus on “emotion work,” and have suggested that its interest in gender equality has been minimal. While From Panthers to Promise Keepers (FPPK) acknowledges the partial truth of these charges, it also revises the story in several ways.
1. It dispenses with the term “men's movement,” as do most recent studies, since the very concept obscures the efforts of gay men and men of color to reinvent masculine ideals.
2. It puts networks of gay men and men of color, most particularly black men, at the center of its account and explores some of the unexpected parallels and differences between these marginalized and subordinated networks and the more dominant white and heterosexual ones. These groups are usually put at the end of a book as separate phenomena.
3. The trend in profeminist readings of these groups is to dismiss “emotion work” as mere therapy or as apolitical. FPPK gives more value than many prior studies to men's “emotion work,” their efforts to invent masculine ideals that validate the open expression of vulnerability, tenderness and care, and that encourage greater emotional closeness to other men, to childre
