Listener's Companion
Titles from this series are split between https://rowman.com/Action/SERIES/SCP/SCP003# and https://rowman.com/Action/SERIES/RL/SCP003

The Listener’s Companion series is dedicated to providing readers with a deeper understanding of key musical genres and the work of major artists and composers. Aimed at non-specialists, volumes explain in clear and accessible language how to listen to works from particular artists, composers, and genres. Looking at both the context in which the music appeared as well as its form, authors explore with readers the environments in which key musical works were written and performed—from a 1950s bebop concert at the Village Vanguard to a performance of Handel’s Messiah in 18th-century Germany. Each title in the series is devoted to a specific composer, performing artist or genre, and series authors draw on their own expertise as performers and scholars to bring readers closer to the musical work as a living listening experience.
